Technology and Materials

Technology and Materials

The Office of Distance Education and eLearning measures online course quality based on the following standards, which were developed using prevailing literature in the field and experience designing online courses at Ohio State.

Course Technology and Materials

The documents, instructions and materials in the course are in formats that are accessible for all students.

Materials that are made with accessibility in mind are easier to create than materials made accessible retroactively. Having accessible materials gives all students the ability to have the materials at the same time.

Copyrighted materials are either provided to students securely though the library or a detailed fair use claim has been documented.

Copyright Services at University Libraries provides guidance and consultation on instructional use of copyrighted materials.

Carmen Course Website

Content and activities are organized into weekly modules or another clear navigation structure.

Consistent navigation assists the learners in knowing how the course will run.

Clear, consistent directions are included in Carmen about what students are expected to do with all materials and activities.

These directions give learners an opportunity to make the connections between the content, activities, and assessments.

The course is built with an online-learning-specific Carmen course template.

Using a consistent template in a program allows students to concentrate on learning the materials over having to navigate each course to find where the materials are located.

Other Required Technology

The course syllabus lists all required technology and includes instructions for how to access and find technical support for those technologies.

This gives students information on how to get technical support that they otherwise won’t be able to receive by the Ohio State help desk and the complete cost to take the course beyond the cost of the text book(s) that may be required.

The course website and syllabus include accessibility, data privacy and cost information for any non-Ohio State course technologies.

This gives students information on how to get accessibility accommodations if required, how their data is going to used and stored beyond what may be used by Ohio State and the complete cost to take the course beyond the cost of the text book(s) that may be required.
