A Carmen (Canvas) To-Do List for Students
You registered for classes, you bought your books, you have your tech gear charged and ready for the new semester...but have you visited carmen.osu.edu recently? This semester, your courses in Carmen can be built with two different platforms. To get your semester off to a smooth start, you should familiarize yourself with the new Canvas platform by completing the following to-dos:
Log in at carmen.osu.edu
Get to know the new Carmen landing page. All of your available courses will display here, no matter which system was used to create the course. Take a brief virtual tour of the new landing page and the Canvas dashboard so you can easily navigate your classes this semester.
Set up your profile
When you enter a course in Canvas or navigate to the Canvas dashboard, you will be able to make changes to your account. You can upload a photo and customize notifications for different content and devices.
Keep in mind, your Canvas profile is linked to your email@example.com account. You should add your firstname.lastname@example.org address to your list of emails in Canvas along with any other email addresses you check regularly. This step is necessary if you'd like to be able to respond to Canvas discussions directly from the email account you use most.
Whitelist Canvas notifications
Add email@example.com to your email client's "safe senders" list to keep important class notifications coming directly to your inbox. If you use more than one email address, remember to do this for each account so Canvas messages stay out of your spam folders.
Download the mobile app
You can download Instructure's app called "Canvas" for iOS and Android devices so you can access your Carmen courses on the go. Even if you don't have any classes using the Canvas platform, you can still download the app to set up mobile notifications for future classes and create a panda avatar, because, why not?
Explore new features
The user-friendly mobile app is just one of the enhancements you'll notice with classes utilizing the Canvas platform. The Canvas adoption process is bringing so many new features to Carmen, including a calendar that syncs all of your due dates in one place, an email inbox within Canvas, the ability to submit video assignments and so much more. Instructors will also have access to a SpeedGrader app so they can get feedback and grades to you even sooner.
If these new features aren't available in your courses yet, let your instructors know that you want to use them!
