Program 60 for Instructors

Program 60 has been serving mature learners at Ohio State since 1974. Ohio residents aged 60 years and older may participate in classes on an audit basis, when space is available. The university community recognizes the benefits of lifelong learning and the intergenerational learning environments that Program 60 provides. The information below may be useful for you if you are unfamiliar with the unique processes in place to serve Program 60 students. Thank you for supporting our learners as they pursue their educational goals. Check out Program 60 to learn more.

“I am a huge fan of Program 60! I try to always make room for the students! Their experience and expertise adds so much value to the discussions I lead among other students.” – Elaine Grogan Luttrull

Student quote:

“The classes I took this spring were both very beneficial to me, thanks to my instructors: Elaine Grassbaugh (Organic Gardening) and Greg Lott (CPR and First Aid). Program 60 is a really great public service for OSU and I will surely continue to enroll.” – Andy Lechler

Have a Program 60 student in class?

The following resources will help you support your student.

Program 60 participants are now in the Student Information System (SIS). Because of this their names will automatically appear on your Carmen class list and they will have automatic access to your course on Carmen.

Note: If you a participant is have diffuculty accessing Carmen, THEY likely have not activated their account. Please have them contact the IT Help Desk at 614-688-HELP (4357).

The level of participation for Program 60 participants varies based on expectations set by both the instructor and the student. Please be sure to have a conversation with your participant regarding expected participation level prior to, or during, the first week of classes. The exceptions are foreign language courses which typically require full participation by the Program 60 participant to maintain a consistent level of knowledge in the classroom.

Program 60 participants are eligible to audit courses on a space availability basis. For questions or concerns regarding enrollment of a Program 60 participant in your course please contact the Program 60 Coordinator by email, or call the ODEE office at 614-292-8860.

In case you have not had a Program 60 participant in your class in the past, with the level of participation determined by you and the participant. The Program 60 participant is auditing the class and will be preassigned a grade of "R" for Audit. As the instructor, you will not be asked to issue a grade for this student beyond the "R". On occassion participants are interested in receiving verification that they successfully completed a course and in these cases, some instructors have provided a letter directly to the student. Also, there are students who greatly appreciate receiving an informal grade for courses that they’ve completed the work in. Again, this communication is between the student and their instructor.

Program 60 participants may register online by going to the Program 60 website through the first Friday of each term (enrollment through the second Friday.) Enrollment in courses after the second Friday of the term will not be permitted.

Program 60 participants are allowed access to Ohio State library resources. Access is granted to students when they visit the Thompson Library each term to reactivate their account. They must present a BuckID to the librarian when they request reactivation. Because Program 60 participants are now enrolled and appear on the class roster, automatic access is granted to the Secured Media Library. Contact with any questions or concerns.

  2. They have not completed the required registration form.

    • If so, please contact the Program 60 Coordinator by email, or call the ODEE office at 614-292-8860.
