Summer Semester and Carmen (Canvas)

A new semester plus two learning management systems equals new functionality added to the landing page of carmen.osu.edu.

You may have noticed changes happening on carmen.osu.edu over the past few weeks. As of today, a few more updates will make it easier for you to navigate your courses during the Canvas adoption year.

A NEW LANDING PAGE

When you log into carmen.osu.edu you will come to a new landing page where all your courses are listed. When you click on a course, it will take you to the LMS that the instructor is using. Instructors will also have access to additional functionality for Carmen (Canvas), including the ability to create master courses and academic courses.

NOTE: Initial instructor functionality on the landing page is available to instructors who are teaching this summer. The same functionality for other instructors will be available later in May. We expect to continue adding functionality to the landing page for all instructors over the summer. This staged rollout of updates to carmen.osu.edu has enabled the Learning Systems team to ensure the new landing page will accommodate all your Carmen needs.

FILTERING YOUR COURSES

When you first view the landing page you will see all Canvas and D2L courses for the current semester, the most recent past semester, and eventually, the upcoming semester.  An “Other” category will contain non-academic courses. To view additional terms, you will use the Filter widget and click Load More Courses.

NAVIGATING BETWEEN CANVAS AND D2L

Clicking an active course title will take you to your course. Clicking the graduation cap icon in either LMS will bring you back to the landing page. If you get lost or confused, you can always go back to carmen.osu.edu to return to your full list of courses.

If you opened your summer course in Carmen (D2L) but want to teach with Carmen (Canvas), you now have the ability to switch to Canvas. Exciting news, we know.

IMPORTANT: the pilot section of carmen.osu.edu will be going away early morning on Sunday morning, May 15. If you participated in the spring Canvas pilot, be sure to save any content you want to keep. This includes both instructional material and student submissions.
