Quality Matters Grants

Summary

The Ohio State University is a subscriber to Quality Matters (QM), a peer-review process designed to ensure quality design and continuous improvement of online and hybrid courses. ODEE provides various grant opportunities for faculty and staff to complete the suite of QM workshops and certification courses.

  • Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR): QM's flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the rubric to review online courses with the intent of continual course improvement.
  • Peer Reviewer Course (PRC): Designed to prepare experienced online faculty to become Quality Matters Certified Peer Reviewers.
  • Master Reviewer Certification (MRC): An advanced certification workshop for experienced QM Peer Reviewers.
  • Master Reviewer Re-Certification (MRR): The Annual Re-Certification workshop for QM Master Reviewers.
  • The Online Facilitator Certification (OFC): Prepares qualified participants to facilitate the online Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR) workshop including preparation, navigation, management, and assessment.

Goals of the QM Grants

  • Enhance the student experience at Ohio State
  • Advance Ohio State instructors’ skills in quality online course design
  • Create local QM expertise and community
  • Support a common language at Ohio State around online and hybrid course design

Steps to Apply for the QM Grants

  1. Decide which grant for which you are applying
  2. Submit an Ohio State eRequest for the cost of the Quality Matters Workshop
    • Note: In your eRequest, use the following information as the Vendor/Payee Information: QM Quality Matters, Inc. 1997 Annapolis Exchange Parkway Suite 300 Annapolis, MD 21401
    • The use of a University PCard will help expedite the grant process
  3. Once your eRequest has been approved, apply for any of the Quality Matters workshop or certification courses grants by visiting the Quality Matters Grant Application Page
  4. Once your application has been approved, register for the Quality Matters workshop or certification courses.

Note: The use of a University PCard will help expedite the grant process. You can use the "Invoice" option for payment if you prefer.

Deliverables

General Deliverables

  • 100% of the registration fee will be reimbursed

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Grant

  • Eligibility to take the Peer Review Course to become a QM Peer Reviewer (Peer Review Course Grant available)
  • Experience as a student in an online course

Peer Reviewer Course Grant

  • Your name and areas of expertise will go into the QM database, and you may be offered opportunities to participate in formal peer reviews of online college and university courses from institutions across the nation for a stipend.*
  • Your name and areas of expertise will be sent to the Ohio QM Consortium, and you may be called upon by Ohio QM Consortium to participate as a peer reviewer without stipend, but for credits for Ohio State to use to toward reviews of Ohio State courses.

Master Reviewer Certification Grant

  • Opportunities to lead formal peer reviews of online college and university courses from institutions across the nation.
  • Your name and areas of expertise will go into the QM database, and you may be called upon by QM to participate as a master reviewer for a stipend.*
  • Your name and areas of expertise will go to the Ohio QM Consortium, and you may be called upon by Ohio QM Consortium to participate as a master reviewer without stipend, but for credits for the university.

The Online Facilitator Certification Grant

  • Opportunities to facilitate the online Applying the QM Rubric Workshop.
  • Your name and areas of expertise will go into the QM database, and you may be called upon by QM to facilitate an online Applying the QM Rubric Workshop for a stipend.*

Eligibility

General Eligibility

  • Ohio State faculty or staff with 50%+ appointment.

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Grant

  • Graduate Teaching Assistants interested in taking the workshop or course coordinators interested in GTAs you supervise taking the workshop, please contact us for more information.

Peer Reviewer Course Grant

  • Successful completion of the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Professional Development and
  • Current (within the last 18 months) online teaching experience in a regular for-credit course

Master Reviewer Certification Grant

  • Successful completion of the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric and the Peer Review Course Professional Developments, and
  • Current (within the last 18 months) online teaching experience in a regular for-credit course, and
  • Completed two formal Quality Matters Reviews

The Online Facilitator Certification Grant

  • Successful completion of the Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR)
  • Successful completion of the Peer Reviewer Course (PRC)
Expectations

General Expectations

  • The Quality Matters workshop normally requires 20–40 hours of time over two weeks to complete.
  • If cancellation is necessary, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the start of the workshop by contacting the workshop facilitator and the Ohio State Quality Matters institutional representative.
  • An E-mail from your Chair or Supervisor to lombardo.89@osu.edu stating their support for your participation in the QM workshop.
  • Please make your Financial Officer aware that you are taking this course and that a financial transaction will take place around the end of the workshop.

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Grant

  • Subsequent to completing the APPQMR workshop, you will be asked to:
    • Create a blog entry or video promotion about your experience with the APPQMR workshop.

Peer Reviewer Course Grant

  • Subsequent to completing the PRC certification course, you will be asked to:
    • Create a video promotion about your experience with the PRC.
    • Participate in a combination of two either formal QM reviews for Ohio State without a stipend or QM reviews for the Ohio QM Consortium on behalf of Ohio State without a stipend.
    • Participate in Quality Matters Rubric update courses in years that QM releases updated versions of the rubric.

Master Reviewer Certification Grant

  • Subsequent to completing the MRC certification course, you will be asked to:
    • Create a video promotion about your experience with the MRC
      • Note: If you have already created a promotional video for either the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric Grant or Peer Reviewer Course Grant, your expectation to create a video has already been fulfilled.
    • Participate in two formal QM reviews for Ohio State without a stipend within 18 months of finishing the Master Reviewer Certification.
      • One for a course in your college
      • One for a course identified by the Office of Distance Education and eLearning
    • Participate in one informal QM review for a course identified by the Office of Distance Education and eLearning without a stipend.
    • Participate in a panel or presentation about Quality Matters.
    • Participate in Quality Matters Rubric update workshop in years that QM releases updated versions of the rubric.

The Online Facilitator Certification Grant

  • Subsequent to completing the OFC certification course, you will be asked to:
    • Conduct two Online APPQMR Workshops.
      • One in Spring Semester and one in Autumn Semester
      • Will work with the QM Coordinator to advertise the workshops.
Stipulations

General Funding Stipulations

  • The Office of Distance Education and eLearning will sponsor the fee only if the QM workshop or course is completed successfully.
  • If an individual register for the workshop or certification courses and does not complete it successfully, that individual or his or her unit or department will be responsible for paying the registration fee.
  • If an individual register for the workshop or certification courses and does not follow the proper cancellation procedures, that individual or his or her unit or department will be responsible for paying the registration fee.

About Quality Matters

Quality Matters (QM) is an inter-institutional organization that sets baseline research-based standards to ensure quality design for online and hybrid courses.  The QM Rubric is based on national standards and best practices, research literature, and instructional design principles. The rubric has a set of eight general standards, with specific criteria under each:
